Parrot's death spurs lawsuit

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - December 29, 2008

Thomas Goodrich says he was denied a phone call that he says he would have used to have a friend feed his pets while he was locked up. When he was finally released, he found his macaw named Freddy was dead.

Goodrich claims the bird was worth at least $5,000. He is suing Department of Correction Commissioner Carl Danberg and former warden Raphael Williams for $250,000 apiece.

Goodrich says a code number he was given in jail to operate the phones, even to make a collect call, did not work. When he asked for a replacement number, he was told he'd have to wait up to 8 days.
