Puppy found after being left for dead

VOORHEES, N.J. - June 4, 2009 - Police say someone put the little female in a backpack that had been hung from a tree at a parking lot in Williamstown.

A police officer responding to an unrelated call heard the dog barking, and quickly rescued it.

The puppy's been named Mercy and she's being treated at the Voorhees Animal Orphanage on Cooper Road.

If the person who abandoned Mercy is found, they could face criminal charges.
