Children hurt after fall from window

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - June 17, 2009 - It happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. at a home in the 2500 block of N. Bancroft Street.

Shamir Facen, 5, and his sister Gracie Fennell, 4, plunged two floors to a concrete patio after falling out a window.

They were taken to the hospital with head and neck injuries.

Shamir Facen is listed in good condition while Gracie Fennell is fair.

Both remain at Saint Christopher's Hospital

It appears they had been reading a book in bed while leaning against the window.

The entire window came out of its frame and landed on the patio along with the kids.

The siblings live in the house with their mother and four other children.

Neighbors say the home is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority which just recently installed new windows.

But the childrens' mother, Monique Tindley, complained that the windows were loose.

"Monique did call the housing authority to come out and fix it, but they never came out and fixed it," said neighbor Eva Feldon.

PHA says the windows were in fact replaced in September 2008.

PHA also says the home has been inspected since that time and that inspection rendered no problems with the windows nor have they received any service requests for window repairs. Feldon said this is just the latest tragedy for the family. Just last month the childrens' mother lost an eye in a car accident, she said.
