A Pennsylvania toddler visiting relatives in southern New Jersey drowned in a backyard swimming pool Thursday after he apparently crawled through a dog door. Seventeen-month-old Andrew Avellino of Newtown Square, Pa., was found in the pool at an Upper Township home around 9:15 a.m. He was taken to Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

State police say Avellino's family was visiting his grandfather, who lives in Upper Township, but did not say whether the accident occurred at the man's home. The boy's mother was upstairs in the home with her other children when he was found.
