Meat, Seafood, Chicken and Produce for less

BENSALEM, Pa. - Sept. 9, 2009

At Bensalem Wholesale Foods, customers routinely get stuck in the tiny aisles, butchers holler out special deals and stockboys pile packages one on top of the other.

Clearly, this isn't your typical chain supermarket. But the prices here aren't typical either.

"This place isn't fancy," Cusuman says. "It's a warehouse supermarket. We don't want to be fancy, we don't want to look fancy."

Here, one dollar will buy you your choice of three boxes of baby spinach, one pound of slab bacon, a bag of green peppers, a box of Little Debbie cakes, or two containers of Sabra hummus.

These are items that are close to -- or in some cases, even past -- their sell-by dates. Regular supermarkets won't take them, so manufacturers sell them to Bensalem Wholesale Foods for cheap, and they pass the savings on.

"Our philosophy is not to make a lot on just a few items, but to do heavy volume," Cusuman explains.

And customers here BUY in heavy volumes, especially when it comes to meat, seafood and deli items. A 40-pound box of chicken wings sells for $20. Fillet Mignon is $2 a pound.

Bensalem Food Warehouse is located at 2802 Street Road in Bensalem, Pa. The phone number is 215-638-7145.
