Officer Van Woodson says the family was staying at the home of Le's cousin when the mother attacked her children then stabbed herself.
Woodson says the 5-year-old, who was initially on life support, is now in a coma with her chances of survival described as grave.
Le and the other girl are hospitalized in stable condition with multiple slash wounds.
Police are unsure of a motive.
