The robbery took place around 12:46 a.m. Tuesday at the CPS Gas Station, located on the 2000 block of New Castle Avenue in New Castle.
When officers arrived, the store clerk told police the robber entered the store with a bandanna partially covering his face, approached the service counter brandishing a gun and demanded cash. The man was given cash and then fled the scene southbound on Route 9.
Officers sent out the suspect description to responding units who began to canvas the area. A man matching the description was located about a half mile south of the gas station on Route 9.
This subject was identified as Norman H. Smith, 49, of Beale Avenue in New Castle, Delaware.
Smith was transported back to the scene and was positively identified as the robber. He had the stolen money in his possession, but the weapon he used was apparently discarded.
Smith was formally charged with Robbery and Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned and issued an $11,000.00 secured bond. He was subsequently committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute.
