Hundreds of Pa. state government layoffs expected

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - October 24, 2009

Gov. Ed Rendell said Friday that he expects hundreds of layoffs to be made right before Thanksgiving as a result of spending cuts.

Rendell made the comments during an interview on WHYY radio in Philadelphia. Many details are still being worked out, he said.

Rendell signed a key state appropriations bill on Oct. 9 that would reduce overall state spending by nearly 2 percent in an effort to help address a multibillion-dollar, recession-driven shortfall.

The state has laid off more than 300 employees since July because of spending cuts.
