After standoff, Berks Co. man charged with wife's murder

READING, Pa. (AP) - October 30, 2009

Authorities in Berks County allege that 51-year-old William Landis Jr. told emergency dispatchers at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday that his 53-year-old wife, Sharon, had been shot in the head. Police said they found the woman's body and found Landis in the basement armed with a knife and three guns, and he threatened to kill them.

Authorities say he told them that he and his wife argued and she threatened to kill him, after which he picked up a gun and accidentally shot her. Police say he also shot at them twice before surrendering at about 4:50 a.m. Thursday.

Landis was charged with first- and third-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on police officers and related offenses. His attorney, Joseph Bambrick, asked people to withhold judgment until all of the facts are known.
