Del. shopping bag law goes into effect

WILMINGTON, Del. - December 4, 2009

Stores with more than 7,000 square feet of retail space or chains with at least three stores of 3,000 retail square feet each are affected by the law that took effect Tuesday.

State Rep. Valerie Longhurst says she proposed the bill in the state House because she wants to keep plastic bags out of the landfill and off city streets.

The Democrat from Bear says her bill is a step toward eliminating plastic bags altogether. She says the law will reduce damage to the environment and raise awareness of better protecting the environment and the city's appearance.
