The last bookstore

LAREDO, Texas (AP) - December 22, 2009

When a local bookstore closes next month, Laredo could be the biggest city in the United States without one. If they don't want to buy online, residents of the South Texas city of nearly 230,000 will have to drive 150 miles to the nearest bookstore.

So, book lovers in Laredo have launched a campaign with the message: Laredo Reads.

A city spokeswoman says even though there's a high level of illiteracy in the area, Laredo is committed to creating "lifelong learners and people who love to read."
