The fire broke out at the La Casa Pasta Restaurant, along the Four Seasons Parkway in Newark, around 12:30 a.m. Friday.
Investigators say it appears the fire started in the kitchen and spread from there.
At one point, firefighters had to stop two distraught owners from trying to get inside the smoldering building.
There are no reports of injuries and no word yet on a cause.
