Swimmers warned of rip currents along Jersey shore

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - August 29, 2010

The National Weather Service says swells kicked up by the storm have continued to build as the weekend progressed. And they expect the rough conditions to continue through at least Monday.

At beaches where swimming was allowed Sunday, officials were warning swimmers to stay in areas where lifeguards are stationed. Dozens of rescues were reported across the state on Saturday, as lifeguards and good Samaritans came to the aid of struggling swimmers.

Action News has learned the Atlantic City Beach Patrol rescued 52 people from the ocean Saturday and dozens more Sunday because of the bad rip currents.

Beachgoers also were told not to swim alone - even if waters don't appear to be risky - because the tides and currents can change quickly and unexpectedly.
