"This male is literally running through the streets partially dressed and we're hoping that maybe somebody saw that," said Captain John Darby.

It was about 9:30 Sunday night that a 22-year-old woman was standing in the Northwest corner of 8th and Race waiting to catch a bus after getting off work. Suddenly a man grabs her by the throat and forces her into the Ridge Ave Spur of the Broad Street subway which is literally across the street from Philadelphia Police Headquarters, where he sexually assaults her.

"This victim could very well have sustained almost fatal injuries, she was strangled. She was choked," said Capt. Darby.

A passerby heard screams and calls 911. Within seconds the sounds of sirens could be heard apparently scaring off the assailant.

"It sets up the idea of this male leaving partially dressed, or leaving like this, it was abrupt."

The male left behind his gray pants and a faded Mexican driver's License in the pocket. It purports to belong to a 35-year-old man named Dario Gomez Lopez of the State of Puebla in Mexico. But police cannot confirm if the license is valid or whether the attacker is the man in the picture, but certainly police say they are looking for someone similar, Hispanic Male, Dark hair, About 5'7", 140 lbs.

"He was wearing at the time a dark shirt with light sleeves."

Indeed, the shirt the suspect is wearing is unusual. The body of the shirt is a dark color, but the sleeves are white.

Police could find no criminal record at the local, state or federal level for the man listed on the Mexican driver's license. The Mexican consulate could not find anything either.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
