The cleanup is under way after a deck collapsed in the 7900 block of Michener Avenue.
The collapse brought a sudden end to a family's Labor Day celebration.
Alex Beattie, the cousin of the homeowner, told Action News his family had gathered just after 5:00 p.m. for a Labor Day weekend barbecue. That's when the covered wooden deck suddenly gave way.
"We were having a picnic and everybody came out on the deck…and all of a sudden it came down," Beattie said.
Neighbors rushed in to help free about a dozen people who'd been on the deck from the rubble.
Seven people, including a three-month-old girl, were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center.
One of the victims was treated for burns she suffered when the lit grill hit her leg.
None of their injuries was considered life-threatening.
The deck fell onto a Cadillac that had been parked underneath and sideswiped another car in the alley.
The incident definitely interrupted what had been a beautiful evening of block parties and family gatherings in the neighborhood.
According to a Licenses and Inspections official on the scene, they do not believe the deck collapse was caused by any sort of negligence; it may have just been because of the age of the deck itself.
