Police nab suspect in string of burglaries

LOWER MERION, Pa. - November 12, 2010

Authorities say Michael E. McMonigle, 26, of Philadelphia broke into at least four homes in Lower Merion and was caught trying to break into another on October 22nd. Philadelphia police also plan to charge McMonigle in connection to a string of burglaries in the city's Chestnut Hill section.

McMonigle was caught after a neighbor spotted him outside a resident along the 200 block of Avon Road. The neighbor's description matched a description that police had developed as they investigated a series of recent burglaries.

Police put McMonigle under surveillance and caught him as he was trespassing on property on Charles Lane in Wynnewood.

During their investigation, police found a large amount of stolen jewelry from a pair of homes linked to McMonigle. Since McMonigle's arrest, police have also recovered some more jewelry from local pawn brokers.

Police say during the burglaries, McMonigle was operating a 2007 black Sebring bearing with a Pennsylvania license GJC-7599. Anyone with additional information about him or about his vehicle should contact Detective George Ohrin at 610-645-6233.
