Stamping out smoking on submarines

GROTON, Conn. (AP) - November 15, 2010

The Navy is trying to get submariners ready for when the smoking lamp goes out for good on New Year's Eve.

There are smoking cessation programs at the Groton, Conn., submarine base.

The Navy will also offer nicotine patches and gum to sailors who want them.

The Navy has ordered an end to all smoking on submarines.

The ban comes 16 years after the military ended smoking in most other indoor areas.
