Local students send school supplies to Zimbabwe

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - January 14, 2011

It sort of feels good because you are helping someone else.

From Montgomery County, to Mutoko Chimukopa village in Zimbabwe, the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School students are sending basic supplies to students they will never meet.

"I know that they have a brick school, a mud school and that we are helping them with their school supplies," said Bobby Putnick.

The Chimukopa Primary School has 400 students, and until recently they had no paper, no pencils, and just one box of chalk for nine teachers to share.

Often there would be 10 children with one set of school books.

The Zimbabwe Education Fund says it costs just $35 to get each child through the school year and that money doesn't just cover much needed school supplies.

"It also includes providing lunch for them. Some of them will only have a meal if it is provided at the school," said Toni Kauffman, Community Relations Director, Pa. Virtual Charter School.

These students are helping raise the money through a read-a-thon.

"We are reading for them so that they can have a better school," said 3rd grader Ryan Rushik.

The goal, 10 million minutes read by April 15th.

"I read for the children in Zimbabwe to benefit their school, and I also like to read. So reading for a good cause, I like", said Bobby Putnick.

And Bobby is not shy about sharing that message, in fact, he's including a handwritten note in his packets.

"It says. Hello I'm Robert Putnick and I love to read. I love it!" said Bobby.
