Philadelphia fire crews battled a two alarm apartment fire in West Philadelphia Thursday night.

The Red Cross tells Action News they are providing direct financial assistance to 20 people total, including 5 children, to buy food, clothing, shoes and other emergency needs.

Fire broke out just before 7:00 p.m. in the 4500 block of Walnut Street.

Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing from a 4-story apartment building.

A second alarm was struck moments later.

The building was evacuated. 15 units were affected by the fire and 12 of which were destroyed.

A woman living in the apartment and a firefighter were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire was brought under control at 7:36 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
