Number of home births on the rise

May 20, 2011

The number of home births in the U.S. went up 20-percent between 2004 and 2008.

Not surprisingly, the number of home births with a nurse-midwife also went up, while those attended by a physician went down.

Of the home births in 2008, most were planned. The delivering moms were also more likely to have a college education.

Experts also show at least some of the home births may have been due to financial restrictions. A home birth costs two-thirds less than in the hospital if there are no complications.
