Tire blowout likely preceded NY tour bus crash

A tour operator whose bus crashed in upstate New York says the vehicle's front tires were only a couple of months old. One of them evidently blew out and sent the bus veering out of control off an interstate, killing two people and injuring 35.

Dan Ronan of the American Bus Association, speaking for Bedore Tours, says that a federal inspection last year gave the firm a "satisfactory" rating, the top of three grades.

He says the review found 12 vehicles inspected from the fleet of 19 were in good working order. It wasn't clear if those included the bus in the accident.

Ronan says the driver called Bedore owner John O'Hare from his hospital bed and said the trip was normal until a tire blew and he lost control Sunday near Avoca, 55 miles south of Rochester.
