The accident happened at 3:44 a.m. along Clarissa Street in Hunting Park.
Police say the captain was driving in an unmarked car when another driver struck the back of his vehicle.
The driver then made a u-turn and fled the scene.
The police captain suffered a broken leg. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was treated and released.
Police say the vehicle is described as tan in color with heavy front end damage.
