Officers were called to Louis and Everett streets around 1:30 Saturday morning, after receiving reports of a man with a gun.
Investigators say when officers arrived the man pointed the gun at them.
A short time later, shots were fired by multiple officers and troopers.
The suspect, identified as 23-year old Jeffery Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene, and the gun was later recovered. The state Attorney General's office is investigating the shooting.
