Airport bust yields 3.5 lbs. of cocaine

PHILADELPHIA - December 15, 2011

Officers with Customs and Border Protection arrested 23-year-old Wilson Miguel Jaquez Torres Sunday afternoon after officers discovered the cocaine concealed inside the bottom of his luggage.

Torres was selected for baggage inspection after he returned from a trip to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic shortly after 2:00 p.m. Sunday. During inspection, officers noticed that Torres' suitcase was unusually heavy when empty. Under further examination officers extracted 1,589.2 grams (3 pounds, 8 ounces) of cocaine sealed in plastic from the bottom liner of Torres' luggage.

The cocaine has an approximate street value of $112,000.

Torres, along with the confiscated cocaine, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations agents. The case was then passed on to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. Philadelphia police are continuing the investigation.
