Alligators, turtles removed from Trenton, NJ home

Trenton, N.J. - December 22, 2011

It happened at 11:30am Thursday at a home in the 200 block of Cuyler Avenue in Trenton.

The officer was serving a warrant in a gun investigation when he discovered the animals. Found were 4 small alligators (two reportedly dead), 3 turtles, 4 dogs and a guinea pig.

Trenton Animal Control officers arrived on the scene to remove the animals from the home. The largest alligator was said to be less than 3 feet long.

The alligators and turtles have been handed over to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), which will work to find them a new home.

According to NJDEP, it is illegal to have crocodiles or alligators as pets in New Jersey without proper permits, which require individuals to demonstrate they have the right facilities to properly take care of these kinds of animals.
