The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 3200 block of North 15th Street.
Police say the victim was talking with a woman on a porch when a man wearing a hoodie rode up on a bike and demanded the woman's purse.
When the man tried to step in, the gunman shot him in the chest and killed him.
The gunman then rode off without the purse.
Police are searching for the suspect.
