Husband, wife killed in Willingboro fire

WILLINGBORO, N.J. - November 2, 2012

The fire broke out just after 6:00 a.m. on the unit block of Millbrook Drive.

Officials say firefighters arrived to find a 2-story house with a garage engulfed in flames throughout the entire home.

The quick moving 2-alarm fire was placed under control shortly after 7:00 this morning.

According to family members, the two victims were identified as Edwin Jordan and his wife Charlene Jordan.

One man asked not to be identified but describes how he and several neighbors saw the heavy smoke and flames around 6:00 a.m.at this Willingboro home.

One man grabbed a sledgehammer to break down the back door, but it was too late.

One neighbor said, "There was absolutely nothing we could do. and come to find out they were in this room on the side..mostly up in flames. Had we gone in there they might be pulling us out of there too."

According to friends, Edwin was a Deacon at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Palmyra, New Jersey.

Friends say Edwin was in the military and was a great chef-chairman of the church culinary committee. As recently as yesterday he cooked a huge feast. They can't believe they're gone.

Dayton Smith, the church trustee said, "In fact yesterday we just had a big meeting there, cooked a big meal for everybody about 250 people. "

His wife had been a Deaconess at the church, but in recent years was unable to attend.

"The Jordans were a lovely family, and he was dedicated to his wife,." said Sally Smith, a family friend.

Investigators say the power was off in the home and there was a generator on the premise but they are still trying to determine what sparked the fire.
