Police in Pa. kill theft suspect outside Kmart

SPRINGETTSBURY TWP., Pa. (AP) - December 30, 2012

The York Daily Record says police in York County identified the victim as 40-year-old Thomas William Shultz of York.

Springettsbury Township officers were called to the store just before 7 p.m. after a retail theft was reported.

Police Chief Thomas Hyers says four officers managed to get the suspect outside, but he had a knife and refused to drop it, even after being hit by a stun gun.

Hyers says the man charged at two officers, and both fired. Shultz was pronounced dead at York Hospital.

Hyers would not identify the officers but says their actions appear justified. State police are investigating.
