NJ Little League coach accused of hitting teen ump

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. - May 3, 2013

Berkeley Township police say 43-year-old Thomas Murphy was given summonses for simple assault and simple assault at a sporting event in the presence of children under 16.

Thursday's game between the Little League Dodgers and Mets included players who ranged in age from 10- to 12-years-old.

Detective Sgt. Jim Smith tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/ZEaF4v ) there was an argument about a call on the base paths and the coach smacked the teenage ump in the ear after the umpire threw him out of the game.

The umpire didn't require medical treatment.
