It happened at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday on northbound I-476 near the Baltimore Pike exit.
Images from Sky 6 and Chopper 6 HD over the scene showed flames coming from a minivan or SUV and a long backup in the northbound lanes.
Firefighters responded quickly. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Traffic was backed up for more than an hour as crews worked to clear the scene.
