Former treasurer stole $81K from church in Hatfield, DA says

HATFIELD, Pa. - December 12, 2013

Stephanie Kligge is charged with multiple counts of Theft, Receiving Stolen Property and Misapplication of Entrusted Property.

Prosecutors say Kligge stole $81,453.20 from the Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church on South Main Street in Hatfield while she served as treasurer of the board from July 2012 through June 2013.

Investigators say Kligge made 64 bank withdrawals totaling more than $61,000 for her personal use.

They say she also bought $20,000 worth of gift cards for a church fundraising program, but kept them for herself instead of using them for the church.

Kligge is also accused of covering her tracks by writing false treasury reports.

Prosecutors say the fake balance sheets showed more than $100,000 in the bank, when in fact only $36.11 remained.

Kligge was arrested and arraigned Thursday. Bail was set at $25,000.

A preliminary hearing is set for December 24th.
