Around 8:15 p.m. Thursday police from Tinicum Township notified Philadelphia authorities about a van they were in pursuit of that contained four suspects of a retail theft.
The chase was along Northbound I-95 and wound its way off the freeway and onto Columbus Boulevard then down to Broad Street.
As Philadelphia police pursued the suspects' vehicle, the van crashed into a taxi with a couple inside along South Broad in the Sports Complex area.
No one in the taxi was injured.
The suspects in the van fled the scene, but police were able to catch up to two nearby.
At the time of the crash, a Philadelphia Flyers game was taking place inside Wells Fargo Center.
"We have a Flyers game, there's normally a lot of traffic on South Broad Street right by the entrance of the Navy Yard, it's a busy intersection. So we're really lucky that just the suspect vehicle only struck the one cab and the occupants of the cab were very lucky because none of them were injured," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. During the pursuit, a Tinicum Township officer accidentally discharged a firearm, but no one was hit.
The search continues for the two remaining suspects, a male and female.
Police say the four stole thousands of dollars worth of power tools from a Home Depot in Ridley Township.
