Suspect charged in home invasion attack in Mt. Ephraim, N.J.

MT. EPHRAIM, N.J. - December 17, 2013

43-year-old Adam Kirk of Woodbury is charged with Attempted Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Burglary, and weapons offenses.

Prosecutors say at 2:00 a.m. Tuesday Kirk, armed with a shotgun, broke into the home of his former girlfriend in the 300 block of Liberty Avenue in Mount Ephraim.

Inside he found the 36-year-old woman and her four children, three girls and a boy ranging in age from 7 to 17, along with a 42-year-old man from Mt. Ephraim.

Prosecutors say Kirk burst into a bedroom and shot the man in the arm. The man fled the home with all four children.

They say the woman then struggled with Kirk, who allegedly fired another shot, missing her.

Investigators say the woman barricaded herself in a bathroom and Kirk pursued, trying to get into the room and slashing at her with a knife. She was able to fend him off and call 911.

Police say when officers arrived, Kirk broke off his attack and barricaded himself in a bedroom. He engaged in a standoff with police until surrendering at 5:40 a.m.

The woman, who sustained minor stab wounds, and the 42-year-old man are both listed in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

Kirk is being held in the Camden County Jail in lieu of $1,015,000 bail.
