Police open fire on suspected pizza delivery car thief in South Philadelphia

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - December 26, 2013

Police say it began Thursday night when the 29-year-old suspect stole a pizza delivery car at 10th and Catherine streets.

A patrol car noticed the stolen vehicle at 17th and Snyder.

Officers attempted to pull the car over, but the suspect continued driving.

Police were finally able to get the driver to stop around 9:30 p.m. at 22nd and Morris.

Authorities say the driver then attempted to strike the officers with the stolen car, resulting in police discharging their weapons on the suspect.

The vehicle crashed and the 29-year-old tried to flee. However, he was apprehended at 22nd and Ellesworth.

The suspect was shot in the forearm and taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition.

Authorities say they are familiar with the suspect.

No other injuries were reported.
