Hudson County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debbie Simon says the boy was with a group of students and adults at a Walmart in Secaucus when he went missing on New Year's Day.
Police have not released the boy's name or a photograph of him.
The prosecutor's office says it is conducting a missing persons investigation.
