It happened at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday on the snow-covered northbound lanes approaching the Girard Avenue exit.
Pennsylvania State Police tell Action News a 25-year-old man lost control of his sedan and collided with a dumpster truck.
Medics rushed the man to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
No other injuries were reported.
Traffic was down to one lane in the area for several hours as police investigated. Crews have since cleared the scene.
