The shooting happened around 3:35 p.m. Thursday on the 1900 block of Tasker Avenue in the city's Point Breeze section.
The 17-year-old victim was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in stable condition, having sustained a gunshot wound to his buttocks.
So far there is no word on what led up to the shooting.
No arrests have been made.
