Students were briefly evacuated from a dorm building at the University of Pennsylvania at the Kings Court English House near 36th and Sansom Street.
Authorities say a package with wires was found.
The bomb squad was called in and the scene was cleared.
It was later determined that the item was a commercial battery and was not harmful.
Students were allowed back inside and the surrounding streets were reopened.
A short time later, someone spotted what appeared to be a grenade on Temple's campus.
Authorities determined it was just a prop, left behind by film students.
No evacuations were ordered.
