It happened around 5:00 Tuesday afternoon on the 100 block of West Louden Street.
Officers heard gunshots coming from the area and arrived to find two men with handguns running from the scene.
Authorities say one of the gunmen fired at police.
An officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the torso.
That suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition while the other suspect was taken into custody.
Police say both of the suspects had been running from the scene of another shooting. The victim there survived a shot to the leg.
The incident remains under investigation.
