Philadelphia City Council unanimously votes to ban E-cigarettes

PHILADELPHIA - March 27, 2014

Philadelphia City Council on Thursday voted 15-0 to categorize e-cigarettes the same way that regular tobacco cigarettes are treated.

That means using the vapor-producing products would be prohibited in places like restaurants, bars and public parks. Similar restrictions are already in effect in cities including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The ban still requires Mayor Michael Nutter's signature to become law. The mayor's office said Nutter will review the legislation when he returns from a papal visit in Rome.

If passed, the ban would take effect July 1.
