Trial begins in death of newborn found in Pa. pub

EASTON, Pa. - April 7, 2014

Northampton County jurors will be asked to decide whether 27-year-old Amanda Hein should be convicted of first-degree murder, which carries a life prison term, or third-degree murder.

District Attorney John Morganelli said during opening statements Monday that Hein killed her newborn son in cold blood.

Prosecutors allege that Hein gave birth in the bathroom of Starters Pub in Bethlehem, wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag and stuffed the bag in a toilet tank. A coroner concluded that the boy was born alive.

Defense attorney Michael Corriere said Hein believed her baby was already dead.
