A grandfather's wish to help his grandson could change the country's organ donation system.

Howard Broadman's grandson Quinn was born with kidney problems and will need a transplant someday.

But by then, Broadman will be too old to donate.

So he worked out a deal with a doctor at UCLA Medical Center to donate a kidney to someone else now, enabling Quinn to get a voucher for a kidney later.

The idea is catching on, the Society of Transplant Surgeons and 9 other institutions are coming on board.

"I left a legacy of putting him from perhaps the bottom of the list to the top of the list. I changed my grandson's life and I may not even be here," says Broadman.

UCLA doctors believe the voucher concept could lead to an influx of living donors.

And that could help reduce the waiting list for a kidney.
