Saquon Barkley hopes to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday birthday 'with green and white confetti'

Saquon Barkley is fueled by the pursuit of legacy and championships, two drivers that are intertwined this week as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for their Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs.

After his historic first season with the Eagles, Barkley has a chance to reach a few more milestones on Super Bowl Sunday, which just happens to be his 28th birthday.

How will he celebrate?

"Hopefully with green and white confetti falling down, and holding up a nice trophy," Barkley said Wednesday.

Barkley put together one of the best seasons of all time for his position, becoming just the ninth running back to rush for 2,000-plus yards during the regular season. He has a chance to be just the third player ever to win the rushing title and the Super Bowl in the same season, joining Emmitt Smith and Terrell Davis.

"It's hard to have a successful season as an individual and go win a Super Bowl," Barkley said. "I think that's kind of a thing where they just focus on the running back position, but how many receivers have the receiving title and won the Super Bowl? How many quarterbacks have the passing title and won the Super Bowl? Hopefully, I am able to be the third one to do it, that's a goal of mine."

Barkley needs just 30 yards to break Davis' record for most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs (2,476).

Barkley, the No. 2 pick in 2018, spent the first six seasons of his pro career with the New York Giants, rushing for over 1,000 yards three times and making the Pro Bowl twice. He decided to sign with the talent-rich Eagles in free agency this offseason in large part because he believed Philadelphia would be a place where he could achieve his goals, including a title.

"When you come to a place, you want to leave your legacy, you want to have an impact," he said. "The best example of how I look at it is, when you think of Marshall Faulk, do you think of the Colts, or do you think of the Rams? That's my goal, to be here and leave my legacy.

"I'm thankful for what happened and the first six years I had in New York, but also I can still be in the ring of honor and have my legacy and be known as a great Eagle."

Which jersey will the Eagles wear in the Super Bowl?

The Eagles are the designated home team with the game being played in New Orleans, an NFC host market, which means they get to pick their uniforms.

Although they get to pick which uniform they wear to the big game in New Orleans, it unfortunately cannot be an alternative one, like Kelly Green.

So, the team opted for their home midnight green jerseys.

The Kansas City Chiefs will wear their away white jerseys, the same color they donned two years ago in the big game against the Eagles.

What are the streaming options for the Super Bowl?

Some of the options include Fubo, NFL+ and Tubi.

Pregame entertainment

The star-studded pregame Super Bowl entertainment lineup includes Jon Batiste, Trombone Shorty, Lauren Daigle and Ledisi.

Batiste will perform the national anthem.

Trombone Shorty will perform "America the Beautiful" alongside Lauren Daigle.

Ledisi will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

Super Bowl 59 halftime show

Grammy winning rap star Kendrick Lamar will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Lamar has experienced massive success since his debut album "good kid, m.A.A.d city" in 2012. Since then, he has accumulated 17 Grammy wins and became the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album "DAMN."

The rapper's latest album, "Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers," was released in 2022. He was featured on the song "Like That" with Future and Metro Boomin on a track that spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. He also garnered another hit with "Not Like Us," one of many diss tracks aimed at fellow hip-hop star Drake that was released in the midst of a rap beef between the two earlier this year.

Multi-Grammy-winning singer SZA will join Lamar on the stage. SZA is Lamar's former Top Dawg Entertainment labelmate. She appeared on his recent album "GNX" and was featured on a couple of songs, including "Gloria" and "Luther," which also features sampled vocals from Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn through "If This World Were Mine."

The duo's previous hits include the Oscar-nominated "All the Stars" and "Doves in the Wind."

Last year, Usher shined with a star-studded show and guests including H.E.R., Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon, Ludacris and Alicia Keys.

Kendrick Lamar appears at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 27, 2017, left, and SZA appears in the press room at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles on April 1, 2024.

Which teams do celebrities like?

Swift will be rooting for her beau Kelce and the Chiefs, but she's far from the only star with a rooting interest.

The Chiefs' famous fans include Paul Rudd, Rob Riggle, Heidi Gardner, Jason Sudeikis, Henry Cavill, Henry Winkler and David Koechner. Musicians Melissa Etheridge and Tech N9ne have each created songs for their team.

Meanwhile, the Eagles boast a starry roster of superfans such as Bradley Cooper, Will Smith, Kevin Hart, Miles Teller, Pink, Questlove and Meek Mill.

Betting nuggets

The Eagles entered the season 11-1 to win the Super Bowl and +550 to win the NFC. They were tied for the second favorites to win the NFC entering the season with the Lions, trailing the 49ers (+260).

Underdogs have won three of the past four Super Bowls. Since 2007, underdogs are 10-7 outright and 12-5 against the spread in the Super Bowl.

The line for the rematch opened with the Chiefs as a 1.5-point favorite at ESPN BET and had a total points over/under of 49.5.

The Eagles are 13-7 against the spread this season, including the playoffs.

The Chiefs are 8-11 against the spread (ATS). If they win the Super Bowl, they will have the worst ATS record by a Super Bowl champion (2021 Rams were 10-11).

Gut-reaction predictions

Stephania Bell, NFL injury analyst: Chiefs. I learned my lesson after picking against them last year; the more intense the competition, the more they rise to the occasion.

Matt Bowen, NFL analyst: Eagles. I'll take the Philly run game with Barkley and a pass rush that can win on the edges, while also creating interior pressure to disrupt Mahomes' timing.

Matt Miller, NFL draft analyst: Chiefs. I have a rule to never pick against Mahomes in the Super Bowl. It's that simple.

Dan Graziano, NFL national reporter: Chiefs. They are inevitable.

Eric Moody, fantasy analyst: Chiefs. Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense might not look as explosive as in past seasons, but they deliver when it matters most. Add in a Kansas City defense that's playing at a high level, and this team is tough to beat.

Dan Orlovsky, NFL analyst: Chiefs. Because it's the Chiefs.

Aaron Schatz, NFL analyst: Chiefs. They are peaking at the right time, and I am worried about the injuries on the Eagles' interior offensive line .(Landon Dickerson left the NFC Championship Game with a knee injury.)

Lindsey Thiry, NFL national reporter: Chiefs. There's no way you can pick against coach Andy Reid and Mahomes. Time and again, all they do is win.

Seth Walder, analytics writer: Eagles. They're a complete team with strength built on strength built on strength. They'll avenge their Super Bowl LVII loss.

Seth Wickersham, NFL writer: Chiefs. It's too hard to beat the Reid/Mahomes/whichever receiver has a big game/Steve Spagnuolo combo.

Field Yates, NFL analyst: Chiefs. Like Matt Miller, there are a few rules in life that I will forever follow. Near the top of that list is not to pick against Mahomes in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs make history with a three-peat.

What does history say about the Chiefs' quest to three-peat?

While the Chiefs are trying to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls, they would not be the first NFL team to three-peat. The Packers won three straight NFL titles during the Curly Lambeau era from 1929 to 1931, although there were no playoff games and only 12 teams in the league. Green Bay also accomplished the feat during the Vince Lombardi era from 1965 to 1967, which included wins in the first two Super Bowls after the 1966 and 1967 seasons.

The Chiefs are the first team to make the Super Bowl in Year 3 after two consecutive championships. Other teams made three straight Super Bowls but lost one of the first two to prevent a three-peat. The 1971-73 Dolphins lost Super Bowl VI to the Cowboys 24-3 before winning the next two championships. The Patriots came close after they won Super Bowl LI thanks to the infamous "28-3" comeback over the Falcons. But they lost to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII before defeating the Rams the next year.

'Choose Love'

The NFL is stenciling "Choose Love" in the back of one of the end zones in an effort to encourage the country after a series of tragedies over the first six weeks of the year.

"The Super Bowl is often a snapshot in time and the NFL is in a unique position to capture and lift the imagination of the country," league spokesperson Brian McCarthy said in a statement. "'Choose Love' is appropriate to use as our country has endured in recent weeks wildfires in Southern California, the terrorist attack here in New Orleans, the plane and helicopter crash near our nation's capital and the plane crash in Philadelphia."

"It Takes All of Us" will be stenciled in the other end zone, as it has been since the league began using field stencils in 2020 for the NFL's Inspire Change initiative. Teams this season have selected "Vote," "End Racism," "Stop Hate" or "Choose Love" for the other end zone.

Donald Trump to become first sitting president to attend

Donald Trump will be in attendance for the big game, the first sitting president to do so.

The U.S. Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, said in a statement that it has had staff on the ground for days preparing for his visit.

"Extensive planning and coordination have been in place to ensure the safety of all attendees, players, and staff," Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. "Security measures have been further enhanced this year, given that this will be the first time a sitting President of the United States will attend the event."

Super Bowl betting buzz: Coin toss, Gatorade color markets heat up

Everything that happens in sports has additional context when viewed from a sports betting perspective. From season-changing injuries to record-setting moments and so much more, the sports news cycle will constantly and significantly affect the sports betting industry.

ESPN's Super Bowl betting buzz file, with contributions from David Purdum, Doug Greenberg and others, aims to provide fans a look at the sports betting stories that are driving the conversation leading up to the big game.

Coin toss, Gatorade betting markets heat up

Doug Greenberg: With about 24 hours until Super Bowl LIX, the public is increasing its action on bets of all kinds for the big game -- and it's not limited to the play on the field. Let's take a look at how some of the most popular non-conventional prop markets are shaping up.

Coin toss

Believe it or not, the coin toss is perennially one of the most popular Super Bowl prop bets. BetMGM reported coin toss outcome as its most popular prop for this year's game as of Friday morning, and Caesars Sportsbook head of football Joey Feazel says it is always among the top five most-bet markets each year.

"You don't have to think about it and it's quick action. Everybody likes quick," Feazel told ESPN. "Anybody can have a parlay, you wait for the whole game and you lose in the last two minutes. If you can just win or lose within the first five minutes, people tend to lean towards those."

Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles players stand at midfield for the coin toss prior to the NFL Super Bowl 57 football game, Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023, in Glendale, Ariz.

Although some states do not allow betting on the coin toss, the majority do, and in those states the money thus far is saying, "tails never fails."

At ESPN BET, 61.3% of bets and 61.1% of handle is on tails. The sportsbook reported a $20,945 wager at even money on tails, its largest bet in the market so far; the sportsbooks also took a $7,500 bet on heads.

In Super Bowl history, the coin has landed on tails 30 times and heads 28 times, with the latter hitting in three of the last four games. Heads also has the longest winning streak in Super Bowl history at five.

Gatorade color

Another popular prop involves predicting the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach. Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, this market has seen some serious action and resulting line movement.

ESPN BET reports a whopping 76.3% of handle for the color to be yellow/green, compared to only 16.9% of bets. BetMGM says 50% of money and 24% of bets are on yellow/green, both leading the market. Purple is the second-largest money attractor for both books.

"Ideally, if the Eagles win we'd like them not to use purple or yellow Gatorade as well," BetMGM senior trading manager Christian Cipollini said over email.

The hefty action caused a significant shift in the odds at ESPN BET, with yellow/green opening at +200, moving to -180 on Friday and lengthening further to -190 on Saturday. Purple went from +225 to +325 to +380.

Why are those two colors the top options? The Philadelphia Eagles poured yellow/green on head coach Nick Sirriani after the NFC championship, while purple was the color dumped on Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in his team's last two Super Bowl victories.

It should be noted that the Gatorade prop is allowed in even fewer states than the coin toss, likely due to the possibility of it being a known result.

"There's someone who knows what the Gatorade color is going to be," said Feazel. "So anything that's almost decided or could be information-based is something that we try to shy away from."
