VIDEO: Cruz spokesperson resigns in video fallout
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz asked for his communications director to resign after he shared a video from the Daily Pennsylvanian.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz asked for his communications director to resign after he shared a video from the Daily Pennsylvanian.

It all started when staffers from the Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania's student news organization, shot a video in South Carolina this past weekend.

In the video, Marco Rubio walks past Ted Cruz's father and a Cruz campaign worker who was reportedly holding a Bible.

The controversy stems from the comment Rubio makes after seeing that Bible.

The Daily Pennsylvanian at first reported that Rubio, referencing the Bible, said, "Not many answers in there."

Ted Cruz's Communications Director Rick Tyler then spread the story on social media.

But it turns out, Rubio was misquoted.

"I know exactly what I said to that young man," Rubio said to reporters in Las Vegas. "I said the answer to every question you'll ever have is in that book."

Tyler has since apologized for the gaffe, but it still cost him his job.

"This morning, I asked for Rick Tyler's resignation. I have made clear in this campaign that we will conduct this campaign with the very highest standards of integrity," Cruz said at a campaign event in Nevada.

Officials from the Daily Pennsylvanian declined our offer to speak on camera about the situation, but their website has since removed the captions saying Rubio badmouthed the good book., although the raw video remains online along with a correction of their previous report.

The Daily Pennsylvanian placed the following update to their article:

UPDATE: This article has been updated to remove a quote in the video by Marco Rubio that has been called into question, regarding the book the staffer was reading. We have replaced the video with the raw footage without subtitles. Though our original transcription reflects what we originally heard, after reviewing the audio, we feel it is too unclear to say for sure. The transcription on the video was created and posted before a Cruz staffer told us that the book he was reading was the Bible. We showed the staffer in the video this footage on Sunday morning, and he did not correct our transcript. We have reached out to him for comment but have yet to hear back. We have created a timeline of events of our reporting in an effort to provide transparency.

Rubio, meanwhile, says he accepts the apologies he has received from the Cruz Camp, but he says this was par for the course.

"It's every single day something comes out of the Cruz campaign that's deceptive and untrue," he said.
