CARNEYS POINT, N.J. (WPVI) -- The mayor of Paulsboro, New Jersey has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated.

Mayor Jeffery Hamilton entered the plea in Carneys Point Wednesday morning.

He was arrested during a traffic stop in Woolwich Township back in December.

Police say he failed a field sobriety test and refused a breathalyzer.

Hamilton admits he had a few drinks.

But he says it was a mix of medications he was taking for bronchitis that made him impaired.

"I didn't know that had that kind of effect on me. I didn't feel impaired or nothing like that when I got up to leave to go home," Hamilton said.

Hamilton must pay fines and will lose his license.
