OVERBROOK (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are searching for a gunman who ambushed and shot a man who was getting out of a car while an 8-year-old girl was seated in the back seat.
Action News has now learned the victim is a 32-year-old man with a police record who was targeted by gunmen two months ago in New Jersey.
The incident happened at 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 1700 block of North 60th Street in Overbrook.
Police say the driver had just parked outside his girlfriend's house.
The couple was getting out of the car when the victim was shot in the lower back and hip as an 8-year-old girl sat in the back seat.
One neighbor heard the shots from her bedroom.
"I dozed off, and I heard five shots," Cathy Reed told Action News. "And they were very loud, which told me it was extremely close.... It was so loud and close I felt it was safer for me to remain lying (down) rather than stand up."
"The vehicle was struck three times by gunfire," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "Two bullets entered the vehicle."
"She is really, really lucky that she wasn't struck by gunfire," Small added, referring to the child.
The victim was taken by his girlfriend to Lankenau Hospital in stable condition.
The victim's girlfriend and the child both escaped injury.
Action News is told the victim has an extensive police record for drug and weapons offenses.
Sources say he was shot at 2 months ago while at his mother's house in New Jersey.
Police say the entire incident was captured by a home surveillance system.
Investigators are working to track down the shooter.
