MEDIA, Pa. (WPVI) -- This week's Shelter Me winner is an animal rescue saving all sorts of animals in Media, Pennsylvania. But it hasn't always been a rescue.

We Love Rescue Pets transitioned from a pet store that sold animals, to a non-profit shelter that rescues and adopts them.

Owner Michael Gill explains, "We felt it was our responsibility and do a little more and give people something different."

Now they offer the best of both worlds.

"Why not give people the opportunity to come in, and see the animals that are rescued and still allow people the accessibility of a pet store," Gill said.

They made the transition in 2013 and have saved 5,000 animals in just over a year.

Gill tells us, "We rescue anything. Almost every day animals come in for adoption that the community brings in."

He showed us a pair of puppies that were found in a hole in the wall after their mother died. Now they've been rescued and are getting plenty of love on their way to adoption.

Gill also introduced us to Wiz, a 3-year old blue tongue skink. The adoption fee includes his aquarium and heat lamp.

And then there's Fluffernutter, a year-old male chinchilla.

"They're a great family pet - not really good for really small kids because they are a little jumpy," Gill said.

Babyface is a 3 and half month-old kitten found on the streets of Darby. He's described as a happy little kitten who likes children and loves to play.

Both Alicia and her son Titus were slated for euthanasia - but We Love Rescue Pets is giving these two dogs a second chance.

"We're trying to get them adopted together. They're bonded very closely," Gill said.

Michael Gill goes on to tell us, "Rescue animals aren't broken and damaged goods. They're just as good as a dog you're gonna buy."

And ruby, a 2-year-old Yorkie, was saved just a couple weeks ago. She's a social butterfly, gets along great with kids and other pets. She wasn't making puppies so she was thrown away. Now she's looking for her forever home.

If you're interested in Ruby or any of the animals you see in the video, you can go to the We Love Rescue Pets website.
