TOMS RIVER, N.J. (WPVI) -- A husband and wife from Brick, NJ have been charged with stealing jewelry, cash and other items from homes in an Ocean County retirement community.

James and Amiko Donegan, ages 37 and 35 respectively, are charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Police say the couple broke into several unoccupied homes during the daytime in the Green Briar Woodlands Retirement Community in Toms River beginning in November 2015.

The latest burglary was reported earlier this month.

Police say investigators from Brick, Berkeley, Ocean Gate, and Lacey townships followed leads that eventually led to the couple.

They say a search of the Donegans' home on Ebb Tide Drive in Brick uncovered evidence linking them to the crimes.

The couple was being held at the Ocean County Jail.

Bail has been set at $150,000 each.
