65 years of love: Ridley couple shares Valentine's Day message

RIDLEY, Pa. (WPVI) -- It's probably not where Dick and Frances Bonnett would want to be celebrating Valentine's Day, but nonetheless the rehab staff at Taylor Hospital in Ridley, Delaware County set up the sweetest little romantic lunch for the eternal lovebirds.

"They have all of their meals together, they go to therapy together, they hold hands; it's very sweet to watch," Dr. Douglas Brunner said.

Various health issues sent the couple to Taylor Rehab together.

Dick has since been released, but his bride is still getting care.

So the staff surprised them with the works: a meal, balloons, teddy bears, candles, chocolates, cake, and, not champagne, but sparkling cider.

And some polka music - their favorite!

"I would be swinging around the floor," Frances reminisced.

In fact, dancing is one of their secrets to a good marriage.

"Do what you want. Enjoy your life. Learn how to do the polka," Dick said.

They shared a few gems to any hopeless romantic willing to listen.

"She's 89, I'm 90. Life is not existing, life is enjoyment," Dick said.

And because 65 years is a long time, a sense of humor is key.

"Frannie and I never argued, we just fought," Dick said with a laugh.

They never had kids and, you know, the topic still comes up.

"We didn't have any. It just happened, but we are still trying," Frances said with a smirk of her own.

There were some laughs and even a few tears, happy ones.

"You have your ups and downs, but you overcome them. Your love is stronger," Frances said.

One other piece of advice from the happy couple: Always make time for each other.
