People, young and old, enjoy weekend warmup

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Last week folks were either hibernating or wearing layers upon layers to stay warm.

But on Saturday we saw folks without jackets.

Action News talked to a lot of people who say after the cold snap they're happy to have a spring-like weekend.

Golfers dusted off their clubs for the chance at a rare February round at Bala Golf Club in Wynnefield, while the course is still winterized.

"Yeah right now we're playing temporary greens until the greens thaw out and everything," said Ben Lesniak, Bala Golf Club.

The club is welcoming back its members with open arms.

"Anything in the 50s is good. It's like Miami after last week," said Lesniak.

"Unless you've gone to Florida and played a lot of golf, it's a much tougher game to try to play well in March," said Sheldon Pollack of Merion Station. "We have matches starting in April, and this gives us a chance to keep our game going."

Four-year-old Piya was also thrilled to spend the day outside.

"I was so excited. I said we had to go to the park. And she loves Magician Mike," said Sabrina Reissman of Fairmount.

Piya shed her coat in Rittenhouse Square as her nanny enjoyed the milder temperatures for a change.

"Oh my gosh it was so cold. And we walk everywhere, too. It's hard to handle sometimes when you're dragging a 4-year-old behind you," said Reissman.

At the Rittenhouse Farmers Market, vendors were happy to see the crowds return. With single-digit temperatures last weekend, some sellers stayed home.

"The fruit, if it gets below freezing - 32 degrees - the fruit will actually freeze," said William Blount of Beechwood Orchards. "So if I put apples out, by the end of the day they'll start to shrivel and rot."

Across the street, diners enjoyed brunch outside, some in short sleeves.

"I was forced by this one to sit outside. (And is it so bad?) No, it's perfect," said Christina Trotta of Center City.
